A conservatory roof is the fastest-dirtying surface on a Fareham house and the one nobody can see until it is bad enough to notice from inside. It sits almost flat, it is shaded by the main roof for part of the day, and it is warm and damp — which is precisely the environment algae wants. Six months of neglect turns clear polycarbonate a milky green; two years turns it into something you would rather not sit under, and by then moss caps have built up along the glazing bars and leaf mulch has silted the box gutter where the conservatory meets the house. That last one is the expensive part, because a blocked box gutter backs water up under the flashing and into the wall. We clean conservatory roofs right across Fareham from the ground — panels, bars, frames, finials, crestings and the box gutter — with soft brushes, low-pressure application and a pure-water rinse. Nobody stands on the roof, nobody props a ladder against the frame, and the difference to the light in the room underneath is usually the thing customers comment on first.

The local problem

Why Fareham conservatory roofs green over so fast

Fareham's damp, sheltered air does most of the work. Sitting between the harbour, the Meon valley and the Solent, the town holds humidity well into the morning, and a near-flat, north-or-east-facing conservatory roof stays wet longest of anything on the building. Algae and lichen colonise that film within a season. Tree cover finishes the job: sycamore, lime and horse chestnut through Wallington, Catisfield, Funtley and the older streets around Fareham Park drop leaves, seeds and sticky honeydew straight onto the panels, and the honeydew turns black with sooty mould. Moss washing down off the main roof tiles collects along the top edge of the conservatory and in the glazing-bar channels, then dams the flow. Along the harbour edge and out at Portchester, gull droppings and nesting debris add to it. On top of all that, Fareham has a lot of 1990s and 2000s polycarbonate roofs now reaching the age where UV has slightly roughened the surface — and rough plastic grips algae far harder than new plastic, which is why an old roof greens up again quicker than a new one.

Our method

Cleaned from the ground, never walked on

Owner-operated by Chris — ex-Royal Navy, trained in the trade, and the same face on every visit. No subcontractors, no sales calls.

Conservatory roofs are not load-bearing. Polycarbonate flexes and cracks, glazing bars distort, and self-cleaning glass coatings are damaged by anything abrasive — so we do not put weight on any part of it. The clean is done with reach poles from the ground or the lawn. First the loose debris is removed: leaves, twigs, moss caps and silt lifted out of the bar channels and off the panels, and the box gutter and any conservatory guttering cleared and flushed. Then a low-pressure, SoftWash UK-approved treatment is applied to break down algae, lichen and the black mould in the honeydew, given proper dwell time, and worked with soft brushes over the panels, bars, frames, finials and crestings. Everything is rinsed down with filtered pure water, which dries spot-free and does not leave the chalky Hampshire hard-water marks a hosepipe would. High pressure is never used on the panels, on the seals or anywhere near the flashing — that is how leaks get created. Where the roof is glass rather than polycarbonate, the same method applies and the side glazing and frames get finished as part of the visit.

Detail that matters

What you're actually
paying for.

The box gutter is the bit that matters

Where a conservatory meets the house there is a box gutter, and on a lot of Fareham conservatories it has never been cleared. Silted with moss and leaf mulch, it backs water up under the lead or flashing and into the brickwork — which shows up months later as damp on the inside wall. It is included in every conservatory roof clean we quote, cleared and flushed, and we will tell you if the flashing or a seal looks like it needs attention.

Glass, polycarbonate, and the honest limits

Clear polycarbonate that has gone milky green comes back remarkably well. Polycarbonate that has yellowed with age is a different matter — that is UV degradation of the plastic itself, not surface dirt, and no clean will reverse it. We will say so before you book rather than after we have taken your money. Glass roofs, including self-cleaning coated glass, clean up to genuinely clear; we use nothing abrasive that would harm the coating.

Priced by the panel — simple and predictable

Conservatory roofs are usually quoted at around £10 per roof panel, which makes the price easy to sanity-check yourself before we arrive. Count the panels, multiply by roughly £10, and you have the ballpark; a Victorian or P-shaped roof with more panels and more bars costs proportionally more. Side glazing and frames are normally included, and if you are already on a window round we can add the conservatory in without a separate call-out.

How often to have it done

Under trees in Wallington, Catisfield or Funtley, once a year keeps it clear. Open, sunnier positions with less overhang usually stretch to eighteen months or two years. The box gutter is worth clearing annually regardless, because that is the one with a repair bill attached if it is ignored.

Straight pricing

Conservatory roof cleaning prices in Fareham

Panel-based pricing keeps it transparent: count the roof panels, multiply by roughly £10, and that is the ballpark before we have even seen it. We confirm a fixed figure in writing from a photo. Heavily neglected roofs with thick moss caps, and conservatories where access is tight, are quoted individually — but you will always know the number before we start.
